Question: Why is Sellier&Bellot Ammo so cheap?

I have been looking for 45 ACP ammo as of late ( it is almost impossible to find decent value 50 5d boxes)

Everything is varying around 23-29 bucks for FMJ there abouts

But when it comes S&B I see their prices have gone as low as 18 bucks for a 50 rd box on multiple sites

I know Wolf is cheap but the way they cut cost is by using a non reloadable steel casings

S&B has brass that can be used again

What gives???

I have noticed the same thing when I buy for my 9mm Mak. Me wonders if S&B is setting a new floor for brass prices and we see other following suit and seeing Wolf drop even further to say $14 or $15 a box. I know I can buy silver bear ammo (JHP) for my 9mm for about $12 where as all the brass stuff is $25 except S&B selling at $19. Strange times indeed.

It is my understanding that S&B brass is reloadable. Or are you indicating that they are using once-fired spent brass in the S&B rounds?

Made in the Czech Republic. They have always been competitively priced it seems to me.

I think he means that you should reload. Especially pistol. Reloading for rifle and shotgun can save you 10-40%. Reloading for pistol can save you over 60%. If you cast your own bullets, bump that to 90%.

No, I dont mess with Reloads

If I do elect to buy I will keep them for barter.

Just a preference unless I personally know the reloader and can examine QC on making it.

I reload for the fun of doing so and working up cartridges that suit my gun (mainly hunting rifles and pistols) so I have never really paid to much attention to the price and cost savings. Now when you get into reloading for bulk storage and you mention 60% savings on pistol ammo, what do you base the savings on. As I said, I can get 9mm Mak rounds with reloaded brass for $25+ or buy zinc cased Silver bear ammo for $12 which is getting into the 60% threshold you mentioned and I don't have my time invested (reloaders can not factor their time in I know).

I've got quite a bit of S&B 9mm. I like it. It seems as good as anything domestic...

Re: Question: Why is Sellier&Bellot Ammo so cheap?

Sourcing components from a reloading supply store where I live, I come up with the following for 45ACP:

Large pistol primers: 2.5c
Hodgdon Titegroup: $13/lb - use 5 gr per round = 2.8c/rd
FMJ bullets: 14.5c
Cast bullets: 8.6c

Putting these together and disregarding your time, you get $9.90 for FMJ, $6.95 for cast, or $3.15 for cast your own (it costs les than a penny per bullet to cast.)

I had originally run the numbers about 12 years ago when new name brand ammo was $12-$15, and I could load FMJ for ~$4.50 and cast my own for $1.75. (Wheel weights were free then at any place that did tires.) The percent savings are not quite as good now, but they are still substantial as you can see.

I've used S&B in my Glocks (9mm, .40 &.45), AR and my shotgun...

Never seen their .308 yet, but I'd try it if I found it...

Never had any issues with it at all...

Where have you seen it for $18/50?

BTW, that is the same price as WWB or Remington UMC at walmart and there is no shipping costs that way.

I never found S&B ammo particularly cheap, but it is of good quality and I've found it as a easy source for odd ball stuff like .303 Brit, noncorrosive.

Twisted, scroll down on the -Armory website. PMC brass case 359.99, comes to 18 a box by the case. Have shot over 10000 rounds w/o hiccup. Dont know about shipping, though as they are up the road from me. Picked up another case last week.

Re: Question: Why is Sellier&Bellot Ammo so cheap?

10 years ago I bought a bunch of S&B loads chambered for the .40 S&W. It was pure garbage and many of the rounds simply failed to fire.

I have bought several batches recently and have no longer encountered that problem. It seems to be fairly adequate for target practice and training purposes.
